Annual Picnic

By Ilze Keegan
We had another beautiful, sunny day for the Annual FCL Picnic in Wakefield, MA. on Sunday, September 9, 2001. Over 100 families attended.

It was wonderful to see how the children have grown, and to hear stories about families’ lives. We even had a second generation attending, as some folks who were adopted from Colombia brought their children to meet us!

Alec and Irina Christie and their daughter were there from our new Russian program. Mary Ann Villeneuve and family, Dawn Davies, and Donna Capuzzo helped sell crafts and food. Mary Ellen Fennessy donated the cost of the ponies, which were a big hit. We had games and prizes. Many families reconnected with each other and with our agency, and the playground got a workout as well.

Families with children from Ukraine found each other, and are planning a reunion in the fall. Children from Russia, Colombia, China, Guatemala, and from here in the United States all had a great time together.

I want to thank my daughter-in-law, Laurie Keegan, and her friend Caroline Stearns, for helping with the childrens’ games. Bob Jolley, our consultant, was there. Many teenagers who had traveled to Colombia had a chance to compare stories.

This year there were also a number of waiting families, and families with children were very kind and welcoming of them.

It truly feels like a family gathering, which is what I hope our agency will be like to the families we serve.

New Program In Cambodia

The FCL announces a new program in Cambodia. Cassandra Keirstead is working with our agency. She helps families by hand-delivering their dossier to Cambodia and beginning the adoption process, and then traveling to Cambodia with groups of families when they receive their child.

Cambodia’s regulations are liberal. Married couples can be 25-55 years old. Singles should be 40-50 years old. Only two children are allowed.

The wait for a child is short, and the cost is modest compared to other programs.
